Attack on Brynn Shander
We saved Brynn Shander from a Frost Giant attack today. Of course, the town guards helped, but I'm not sure they would have been victorious without us. Sadly, a few town guards were killed in the melee, but we made it through with only a few minor scratches and scrapes.
The giants were here looking for someone. Their female general demanded the surrender of an Artus Cimber. She seemed adamant that he was inside the town gates. A few of us recognized the name. Long ago, he was known as a noteworthy adventurer. A Bard, he found an artifact called the "Ring of Winter". Keeping the ring has allowed him to become immortal. I remembered even more from my studies. The ring is a powerful artifact that allows the wielder to control the weather (as long as you want the weather to become colder). You can even make an area permanently cold. It can also be used to cast many cold spells.
Anyway, Duvessa Shane, the Speaker of Brinshander, insisted Artus Cimber did not reside in their town. That is when the giants attacked.
During the fight, a timid gentleman approached me and explained he might be the one the giants were looking for. He introduced himself as Sirac of Suzail. Artus Cimber is his father. Sirac explained he was travelling with a caravan a few days ago and the giants attacked the wagons, looking for Artus. He feels he is somehow being mistaken for his father by whatever magic the giants are using to find Artus. I'm not sure how that could be possible . . . there is no spell that I know of that would make that mistake. But I suppose the operable words there are 'that I know of'. We'll see . . .
I convinced him to stay with us. For safety. (I didn't mention that he would be very useful in being a magnet for Frost Giants, or that we could use him to find his father and the Ring of Winter.) A bit cruel, but . . .
Monster Note: Frost Giants. They are giants and frosty. But seriously, they are larger than Hill Giants. They throw rocks. I didn't even bother with cold spells, they are most likely immune or at least very resistant. We used mostly brute force and fire. Fire worked well. I think Winter used radiant damage a few times. They appeared to succumb to Trella's poison. As with most of the giants we have been fighting, magically slow them down if you can.
Artifacts Found: General's Horn (Ivory/gems) - gems worth about 750gp, her circlet - 15 gems worth 100 gp apiece (1500gp), various other items found on giants - 325 gp
We spent the afternoon cleaning up and that evening we were invited to the Speaker's house.
Aubric and Markham were at Duvessa's dinner. She does not know of Artus Cimber being in town. We discussed the giant problems in both our lands. She spoke to us of a Yaral Storvald. He apparently is questing for something up north. ("Up North" from here? That's pretty far north!)
Markham also noted during the dinner that there are burial mounds in the north that might have artifacts like the Nightstone, could that be what this Yaral is looking for?
Duvessa did tell us the Frost Giants live beyond the Sea of Moving Ice. Her aunt has seen them outside Luskin travelling on longships. To that end, she asked if we could do her a favor. She wants us to travel to Luskin and take possession of her inheritance. It was left with her aunt who Captains the "Dancing Wave".
We were hesitant to leave the town again so soon after the giant attack. What if they come back? Aubric said she will try to get King Ergala Brighthelm, in charge of a dwarf settlement called Ironmaster, to send some dwarves to Brynshander. She was not very confident and asked us for help.
Sir Baric also stopped by! He wants us to help him hunt down the dwarf - The Weevil. He gave us a drawing and told us of the current bounty - 5,000gp
So, we have left Duvessa's with a myriad of quests to accomplish while we are waiting for Harsh Nag to show. I'll lay them out here:
Go to Luskin to check in with Duvessa's aunt, claim her inheritance. (This can also help us to gather intelligence on the Frost Giants.)
Towards that end, Markham says he will give us a bounty for every Frost Giant head we bring him. (We determined any smaller proof of death would be acceptable. And having Sirac around to draw them out . . )
Visit Ironmaster to try to convince them to send dwarves for the protection of Brynshander.
Track down the Weevil.
And Lifferlas asked us to find his Druid mistress.
So much to do . . . . .
We're now back at Calvin's Rest. Sirac was here when we returned. He has decided to accompany us to Luskin where a friend of his father lives, Lord Zelron Roring Horn. He might know where Artus Cimber is, or possibly might have gone to. He said he would give us his father's artifact in exchange for taking him to Luskin (strange thing to say considering he doesn't know where his father is . . . .) He did explain a little further: Artus found the Ring in Iceland Dale during the Spell Plague in 1395.
I forgot to mention, at one point during the visit to Duvessa's, Bennu did take Markham aside and explained about his sister, Ilyndra. Oh, and we get free board at Calvin's Rest for as long as we are in town.
Off to sleep . . . busy days ahead . . .
